Angel-A [2005]

April 11th, 2007

Angel-A

Angel-A is the latest film from director Luc Besson. Andre [Debbouze] is a small time crook who has found himself in a troublesome predicament. He owes money, and is being hounded for it. Facing impending doom, he prepares to throw himself into the River Seine.

Before he is able to do so, Angela [Rasmussen], a tall and beautiful blonde confronts him and questions his intent. She dissuades Andre from ending his life and they embark on a journey together, to discover whether his life is worth living.

The cinematography is what makes this film. It is visually stunning, and sets the mood perfectly. Andre is endearing, Angela is lovable. I love this film, it is simple and does’nt really do all that much, but what id does it does well, very well.

twilight Samurai

Twilight Samurai

One of my favourite films, a must see m m movie is Twilight Samurai.

Based on the novel by Shuhei Fujisawa, Twilight Samurai is the story of a low ranking samurai named Seibei, whose wife has died, leaving Seibei balancing his duties as a samurai with looking after his two young daughters and a senile mother. Set in the dying times of Japan’s Edo period – Seibei works hard to provide for his family, and is teased for not drinking after work with his colleagues. For that he is given the cruel nickname – Twilight Seibei.

Twilight Samurai has incredible appeal. Hiroyuki Sanada (The Last Samurai) is fantastic in his role, and the film is both calming and exciting, working towards a dramatic climax.

movie 300: the battle of Thermopylae

October 6th, 2006

Just seen a trailer for the upcoming film: 300. It looks absolutely amazing. It features the battle of Thermopylae - whereby an alliance of Greek states fought the Persian army in a mountain pass. The Greeks were vastly outnumbered, but managed to hold off the enemy in what is said to be “one of the most famous last stands in history”.

The small force, which was led by king Leonidas of Sparta held the only road passable, and inflicted massive casualties on the invading Persian army, led by Xerxes.

The fighting continued, and on the third day of fighting, a Spartan man named Ephialtes betrayed the Greeks, and revealed to the Persians a route through the mountains which led them behind the Greek army.

Facing certain death, the king remained with 300 of his bodyguards, facing an onslaught of over a million Persions.
